Comparisons

Kava vs coffee: how do they compare?

They pull in opposite directions.

  • Active compound: caffeine
  • A stimulant
  • Onset 15–45 minutes
  • Effects last 3–5 hours
  • Half-life around 5 hours
  • Typically a morning drink
  • Tolerance builds with regular use

Kava

  • Active compounds: kavalactones
  • A relaxant
  • Onset 10–20 minutes
  • Effects last 2–4 hours
  • Half-life around 9 hours
  • Typically an evening drink
  • Sensitivity tends to increase at first

The tolerance difference is the interesting one. Coffee does less over time as tolerance builds. Kava works the other way — it becomes clearer with use, as both sensitivity and your familiarity with the feeling build. It's called reverse tolerance, and it's why kava rewards a few sessions rather than one.

Kava contains no caffeine, and neither do Kavayn's products.

Can you have both? Nothing stops you. Mixing kava and coffee creates a "calm energy" for some, but potentially overstimulation or anxiety for others. Most people who drink both keep coffee to the morning and kava to the evening.
