Is there an age restriction on kava?

You must be 21 or over to buy from kavayn.com. There is no federal age restriction on kava in the United States — it is not an alcoholic beverage or a controlled substance — so this is a policy we set rather than one the law imposes.

Why the label says 18+. Kavayn products carry "For Adult Use Only (18+)", which is the product-level statement. Our US website applies a higher minimum on top of it. If you've noticed both numbers, that's the reason: 18+ is what the product is labelled for, and 21+ is what we require in order to sell it to you here.

Why we set one at all. Kava is psychoactive. It is a relaxant, it affects how you feel, and applying an age minimum is the responsible position for a product like that regardless of what the law requires. Most kava bars take the same view and check ID.

It is not treated as alcohol. Kava contains no alcohol and is not sold under liquor licensing, which is why the rules are not uniform across the category — different sellers land in different places. Ours is 21.
